As 2014 comes to a close, we would like to highlight some of the HEISC (Higher Education Information Security Council) accomplishments this year.
- Participation in the latest EDUCAUSE Review Online transmedia article, “Outside the Box: Evolution and Ascent of the CISO.”
- Publication of the third major edition of the Information Security Guide, aligning with the ISO/IEC 27002:2013 standard.
- Hosting a successful and well-attended 12th annual Security Professionals Conference in St. Louis and online.
- Coordination of 20 guest blogs and 2 webinars for Data Privacy Month in January/February and National Cyber Security Awareness Month (NCSAM) in October.
- Receiving an APEX Award of Excellence for a 2013 NCSAM guest blog by Martin Holste.
- Hosting a lively discussion between CISOs and CIOs at EDUCAUSE 2014 in Orlando. Follow-up professional development activities will continue in 2015.
We would also like to let the community know that we plan to continue the 2014 priorities in 2015: Strengthen Foundations; Continue to Build the Information Security Profession; and Advance Information Security Strategies in Higher Education. HEISC working groups will focus on 3 major activities throughout the year: revising and refining the Information Security Guide; coordinating the Security Professionals Conference and other awareness events; and providing effective practices and guidance and fostering communication within the community. Read the HEISC charter for more information.
If there are specific resources you’d like to see developed next year, please let us know. We look forward to another successful year with our volunteers and the higher education community in 2015.
