Are tools that support teaching and learning keeping up with leading business and consumer tools? What would a next generation digital learning environment look like?

Learning environments in colleges and universities are constrained today by learning management systems that were not designed for broad integration, flexibility, or personalization. To enable learning environments of greater quality, scale, and power, with continuous and instantaneous digital connections to information, services, and communities, the learning management system of today must be reimagined. New systems are needed that capitalize on the transformative possibilities of technology to personalize instruction and integrate the diverse resources that support learners.

EDUCAUSE, with support of the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, is leading the Next Generation Digital Learning Environments Initiative. Through research and community engagement, the initiative will:

  • Investigate and define the next generation digital learning environment problem space and likely solutions;
  • Publish the results of this research and make them available to the higher education community;
  • Define potential investments to accelerate the development of the next generation digital learning environment.
